A brand-new television series based on the globally successful Fast & Furious franchise is officially in development for NBCUniversal’s streaming platform Peacock, marking a major expansion of one of Hollywood’s biggest action franchises.
The announcement was made by actor Vin Diesel during NBCUniversal’s annual presentation to advertisers held at Radio City Music Hall in New York, where he confirmed that a Fast & Furious television project is now actively being developed.
According to NBCUniversal, the upcoming series is intended to expand the Fast & Furious universe beyond cinema as fan demand for new stories connected to the franchise continues to grow worldwide.
Vin Diesel, who famously portrays Dominic Toretto in the blockbuster franchise, revealed that he had once been hesitant to continue producing multiple sequels because he feared it could stop the original film from becoming a true cinematic classic. However, he stated that the franchise has now firmly achieved iconic status within global entertainment culture.
The announcement comes as the Cannes Film Festival prepares to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the original Fast & Furious movie with a special midnight screening this week. Vin Diesel is expected to attend the event alongside several cast members associated with the long-running film series.
Since its launch in 2001, the Fast & Furious franchise has become one of the most commercially successful action franchises in Hollywood history. Across 11 films, the series has generated more than $7 billion worldwide through global box office revenue, merchandise, gaming, streaming, and entertainment partnerships.
The franchise has built a massive international fan base through its combination of street racing, action sequences, global heists, and themes centered around loyalty, friendship, and family. Over the years, the films have evolved from underground racing stories into large-scale international action productions featuring espionage, military technology, and globe-spanning missions.
NBCUniversal also revealed that the Fast & Furious brand is continuing to expand beyond films and streaming platforms. A new Fast & Furious roller coaster attraction is currently scheduled to open later this year at Universal Studios Hollywood, reflecting the franchise’s continued popularity within global entertainment markets.
For Sri Lanka, the Fast & Furious franchise remains one of the most recognizable Hollywood brands among younger audiences and action movie fans. The films have maintained strong popularity across Sri Lankan cinemas, streaming platforms, and television networks for over two decades.
Entertainment analysts say the growing shift toward franchise-based television content reflects broader changes within the global entertainment industry, where major studios increasingly focus on expanding successful cinematic universes into long-form streaming series to retain subscribers and global audiences.
Vin Diesel also praised NBCUniversal executive Donna Langley for helping move the television adaptation forward while preserving the franchise’s core identity and international appeal. He emphasized that themes such as family, loyalty, and global unity would remain central to the upcoming series.
Meanwhile, the final Fast & Furious movie is currently scheduled for release on March 17, 2028, bringing the main storyline of the long-running franchise closer to its conclusion.
What happens next will depend on casting announcements, storyline development, and production timelines for the upcoming Peacock series, which is expected to attract major attention from longtime fans around the world.
