Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa appeared before the Court of Appeal on Wednesday as further submissions were scheduled to be heard in connection with his writ petition seeking an order preventing his arrest and detention.
Rajapaksa arrived at the Court of Appeal shortly before the proceedings commenced to observe the hearing of the petition he filed against the authorities.
The case was previously heard for a fourth consecutive day on the 9th before a Court of Appeal bench comprising President of the Court of Appeal Justice Rohantha Abeysuriya and Justice Sarath Dissanayake. Following those proceedings, the bench postponed the matter for further consideration until today's hearing.
During the earlier proceedings, Deputy Solicitor General Suharshi Herath, appearing on behalf of the respondents, including Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Director Shani Abeysekara, argued that the petitioner had failed to present any evidence to support allegations that the CID Director had acted with malice.
The respondents maintain that the claims made in the petition have not been substantiated with sufficient evidence and have urged the court to dismiss the allegations raised against the investigating authorities.
The Court of Appeal is expected to continue examining submissions from both parties before making any determination regarding the relief sought by the former President.
The case remains under judicial consideration, and no ruling has yet been delivered on the petition.
