Sri Lankan police have seized a large stock of illegally imported smartphones valued at more than Rs. 50 million during a raid carried out at a warehouse in Colombo's Kollupitiya area.
The operation was conducted by officers attached to the Walana Anti-Corruption Unit, who searched a storage facility located on the ground floor of a commercial shopping complex following intelligence received by investigators.
During the raid, officers recovered more than 300 modern smartphones, including a significant number of Apple iPhone devices. Authorities believe the devices had been brought into the country through illegal channels, bypassing the required import procedures.
Police also arrested one suspect in connection with the seizure. The identity of the individual has not yet been disclosed, and investigators are continuing inquiries to determine whether additional people or businesses were involved in the alleged operation.
Preliminary estimates place the value of the confiscated mobile phones at over Rs. 50 million, making it one of the notable seizures involving illegally imported electronic goods in recent months.
The raid is being carried out under the supervision of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rohan Olugala, with further investigations expected to focus on the origin of the devices, the distribution network, and any potential customs or tax-related violations.
Authorities have indicated that additional legal action may follow depending on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
