The Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority has opened the spill gates and silt sluice of the Kotmale Gamini Dissanayake Reservoir today (August 5) to release excess water as inflows to the reservoir continue to increase.
According to the Authority, water is currently being discharged into the Kotmale Oya at a rate of approximately 130 cubic metres per second. Officials noted that the release is being carried out to manage the reservoir's water level following increased inflows.
Following the opening of the spill gates, authorities have warned of the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas downstream of the Kotmale Dam and along sections of the Mahaweli River.
Residents living in Nugawela, Riverside, Mawathura, Ulapane, Gampola, Weligalla, Gelioya, Peradeniya, Katugastota, and Polgolla have been advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard lives, homes, and property.
The Mahaweli Authority further stated that the volume of water released from the reservoir may be increased or reduced depending on the amount of water flowing into the reservoir over the coming hours.
Authorities have urged the public, particularly those residing near riverbanks and flood-prone areas, to follow official instructions and monitor weather and flood advisories as conditions may change.
