A devastating fire that tore through an elders’ care home in Anguruwatota, Horana has claimed the lives of at least 11 residents, while three others remain missing as authorities continue search and recovery operations.
According to police, the fire broke out on the evening of June 3 and spread rapidly through sections of the facility, triggering a large-scale emergency response involving firefighters, police officers, medical teams and local residents.
Officials stated that 72 elderly residents were staying at the home when the blaze erupted. Rescue teams managed to evacuate 44 occupants safely without injuries, while seven individuals who suffered injuries were admitted to the Horana District Hospital for treatment.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, authorities reported that several residents were unaccounted for. Subsequent search operations within the damaged building led to the discovery of multiple bodies, bringing the confirmed death toll to 11. Police say three individuals are still missing, and ongoing searches are being carried out to determine their whereabouts.
The tragedy has shocked the local community and raised concerns about safety standards and emergency preparedness at residential care facilities. Investigators are currently examining the scene to establish the exact cause of the fire and determine whether any structural or safety-related shortcomings may have contributed to the scale of the disaster.
Authorities have not yet confirmed what triggered the blaze, but forensic experts and police investigators are expected to conduct a detailed assessment in the coming days.
A magistrate’s inquiry has been scheduled, while the Judicial Medical Officer is expected to provide further information regarding the identities and causes of death of the victims.
Meanwhile, emergency relief measures have been initiated for survivors. Officials have arranged temporary accommodation for 51 displaced residents at Batagoda Primary School while longer-term support arrangements are being considered.
Police have urged anyone with information related to the incident to cooperate with investigators as efforts continue to determine the circumstances surrounding one of the deadliest fire incidents reported in the area in recent years.
