Five Indian Air Force personnel have been killed after a military transport aircraft crashed while attempting to land at an airbase in northeastern India, according to official statements released by the Indian Air Force.

The accident occurred near the city of Jorhat in Assam state on Saturday during what authorities described as a routine operational flight.

In a statement, the Indian Air Force expressed deep sorrow over the loss of personnel involved in the crash and extended condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.

While officials have not confirmed the total number of individuals on board the aircraft at the time of the accident, reports indicate that at least one crew member survived the crash.

Images broadcast by local media showed thick smoke rising from the crash site, with debris scattered across the area following the impact.

The aircraft involved was a Russian-made Antonov An-32, a twin-engine military transport aircraft widely used by the Indian Air Force for logistics operations, humanitarian missions and supply transport to remote regions.

The An-32 fleet plays a crucial role in supporting operations in mountainous and high-altitude areas across India.

Indian Air Force authorities have announced that a formal investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.

The crash marks one of the most serious military aviation incidents reported in India in recent years.
