Former Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda, has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) over an ongoing corruption investigation.

According to the Commission, the investigation relates to the recruitment of Yoshitha Rajapaksa as an executive officer cadet in the Sri Lanka Navy in 2006 despite allegedly not meeting the required qualifications.

The allegations also concern the decision to facilitate Yoshitha Rajapaksa’s participation in a training programme at the Britannia Royal Naval College in the United Kingdom using public funds through a process that investigators claim deviated from the established recruitment and training procedures.

The Bribery Commission stated that Karannagoda was taken into custody by its investigators at the Commission’s premises at around 10.05 a.m. today (3).

The suspect is expected to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court, while further investigations are continuing.
