The death toll from the recent violence at Negombo Prison has risen to 31 after two more prison officers succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at the National Hospital in Colombo, according to Police.

Authorities said the latest deaths increase the number of prison officers killed in the incident to 10, while the overall death toll now stands at 31.

Police stated that the two officers, aged 25 and 39, died yesterday (13) and during the early hours of today (14) after remaining under medical care following the clashes.

The unrest, which occurred at Negombo Prison on July 5 and 6, also claimed the lives of 21 inmates, making it one of the deadliest prison incidents in Sri Lanka’s recent history.

Several injured prison officers and inmates continue to receive treatment at the National Hospital in Colombo and the Negombo Hospital, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the violence remain ongoing.

Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the condition of the remaining injured individuals.
