Two inmates have died and 35 others have been hospitalized following a violent clash between two groups of inmates at the Negombo Prison today (05).
According to hospital sources, two inmates sustained critical injuries and succumbed following the incident. Two other seriously injured inmates have been transferred to the National Hospital of Sri Lanka in Colombo for specialized treatment.
In addition, 10 injured inmates are expected to undergo surgery at the Negombo Hospital, while the remaining injured inmates continue to receive inpatient treatment.
Preliminary information indicates that the clash may have been triggered by a dispute linked to an alleged drug trafficking operation inside the prison. However, authorities have not yet officially confirmed the exact cause of the incident.
Following the violence, additional security personnel, including officers from the Sri Lanka Police and the Police Special Task Force (STF), were deployed to the prison to restore order and strengthen security.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the incident.
