The death toll from the recent violence at Negombo Prison has increased to 27 after another injured inmate died while receiving treatment at the Negombo Hospital, Police confirmed.
Authorities said the latest fatality was among those seriously injured during the clashes that erupted inside the prison, bringing the total number of deaths to 27.
According to Police, the victims now include seven prison officers and 20 inmates.
The prison unrest, which resulted in significant casualties and injuries, remains under investigation as authorities continue efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Security measures at the prison remain heightened while officials continue inquiries into the deadly violence.
