The death toll from the violent unrest at Negombo Prison has increased to 28 after another prison officer succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka in Colombo.

The deceased officer had sustained critical injuries during the clashes that erupted inside the prison earlier this week.

With the latest fatality, the number of deaths linked to the incident has risen to 28, according to official information.

The violence, which broke out for a second time on the morning of 6 August, left more than 100 people injured. Many of the injured were initially admitted to the Negombo Hospital, while 20 critically injured individuals were later transferred to the National Hospital for specialized treatment.

Meanwhile, the remains of the seven prison officers who lost their lives during the incident were brought to Welikada Prison on Tuesday (08) for fellow officers, family members and relatives to pay their final respects.

Following the tribute ceremony, the bodies were released to their families for final funeral arrangements.
