The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the issuance of a new circular introducing revised guidelines and procedures for admitting students to Grade One in government schools from 2027 onwards.
According to the government, circular instructions governing Grade One admissions are issued annually. The new framework aims to ensure equal and fair access to education, improve transparency in the admission process and minimize irregularities.
The revised circular has been prepared after considering recommendations and observations from several stakeholders, including the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, school principals and education authorities.
The government stated that the proposed changes also take into account ongoing education reforms aimed at modernising and strengthening the country’s education system.
The proposal to introduce the new set of admission guidelines from 2027 was presented by the Prime Minister in her capacity as Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education and received Cabinet approval.
The new circular is expected to provide clearer procedures and strengthen public confidence in the Grade One admission process while ensuring greater fairness for parents and students seeking entry to government schools.
