More than 10 youths have been arrested by Bandaragama Police for allegedly causing public disturbance during Vesak celebrations by riding motorcycles that had been illegally modified to produce excessive noise.

Police said the suspects were taken into custody during a special operation carried out in Bandaragama town after numerous complaints were received from members of the public.

The motorcycles used by the suspects were also seized during the operation.

According to investigators, most of the motorcycles had undergone unauthorized modifications, including alterations to exhaust silencers to create unusually loud sounds and the installation of various non-approved components in violation of motor traffic regulations.

The suspects and their motorcycles were brought to the Bandaragama Police Station by traffic officers on duty before the individuals were later released on police bail.

Police stated that the seized motorcycles will be referred to the Department of Motor Traffic’s Vehicle Inspector for a detailed examination.

Following the inspection, legal action will be initiated and relevant charge sheets will be filed against the vehicle owners.

Authorities further stated that the motorcycle owners will be produced before court once investigations are completed.
