The government plans to strengthen the implementation of the QR code-based fuel quota system in the coming months as part of efforts to reduce fuel consumption and ease economic pressure, Minister of Ports, Civil Aviation and Energy Anura Karunathilaka said.

Speaking at a media briefing today (01), the Minister stated that the current fuel management system has helped regulate fuel distribution, but additional measures may be required to further curb consumption amid ongoing challenges in the energy sector.

He explained that the primary objective of tightening the QR-based system is to ensure more efficient fuel usage and prevent unnecessary consumption during the current economic situation.

According to the Minister, controlling fuel demand is essential to reducing the country’s expenditure on fuel imports and minimizing the outflow of foreign exchange.

He further noted that the government expects the strengthened QR quota mechanism to contribute towards stabilizing the economy while ensuring that available fuel stocks are distributed more effectively.

The Minister emphasized that relevant authorities are currently assessing the necessary steps to enhance the existing system and improve its overall effectiveness.
