Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) General Secretary and Attorney-at-Law Sagara Kariyawasam was arrested by the Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) this morning, August 10, police said.

According to police, Kariyawasam was arrested after arriving at the CCIB to provide a statement in connection with an ongoing investigation into remarks he had allegedly made concerning the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

He had been summoned to appear before the CCIB to assist investigators with inquiries into the statements attributed to him.

Police said the allegations under investigation include claims that Kariyawasam had threatened the IGP and made statements that could potentially incite public disaffection towards the Government and the President.

The CCIB had initiated the investigation on the instructions of the IGP in relation to the alleged remarks concerning the Police Chief.

Kariyawasam’s arrest marks the latest development in the investigation. The allegations remain subject to the legal process, and an arrest does not itself constitute a finding of guilt.

Further details regarding subsequent legal proceedings or whether Kariyawasam will be produced before a court were not included in the information released at the time of reporting.
