The Supreme Court has dismissed, without hearing, a Fundamental Rights petition seeking to invalidate a government circular that permits individuals to legally change their gender.
The petition had sought an order declaring the circular invalid, arguing against the policy that allows both men and women to amend their legally recognized gender under the existing administrative framework.
Former Presidents Maithripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickremesinghe, along with incumbent President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and several other respondents, had been named in the petition.
The Fundamental Rights application was filed by Shantha Jayathilaka, a retired disabled warrant officer of the Sri Lanka Air Force.
However, the Supreme Court decided not to grant leave to proceed with the petition and dismissed it without taking it up for hearing.
