Sri Lanka's Supreme Court is scheduled to consider petitions challenging the proposed 22nd Amendment Bill to the Constitution tomorrow (September 1).
The petitions have been filed challenging the constitutional amendment bill presented to Parliament by the government.
Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena has appointed a five-member Supreme Court bench to consider the petitions against the proposed amendment.
The bench will be headed by the Chief Justice and will also comprise Justices Achala Wengappuli, Arjuna Obeyesekere, Sampath Abeykoon and Gihan Kulatunga.
The petitions are expected to raise legal and constitutional issues concerning the proposed 22nd Amendment, which will be considered by the five-member bench when proceedings begin tomorrow.
The Supreme Court's consideration of the petitions forms part of the constitutional process through which proposed legislation may be reviewed following its presentation to Parliament.
