Nineteen-year-old Kimi Antonelli continued his extraordinary rise in world motorsport after claiming victory at the Canadian Grand Prix, securing his fourth consecutive Formula 1 win of the 2026 season.
The young Italian driver delivered another commanding performance for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, further strengthening his lead at the top of the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship standings.
Antonelli’s latest triumph followed an intense and dramatic battle with his Mercedes teammate George Russell, who was forced to retire from the race after suffering an engine failure midway through the contest.
The two Mercedes drivers produced one of the most thrilling wheel-to-wheel fights seen so far this season, exchanging the race lead multiple times while driving aggressively in difficult weather conditions. Fans witnessed several tense moments as both drivers pushed their cars to the limit and came dangerously close to making contact during the battle.
The rivalry between Antonelli and Russell had already intensified during Saturday’s sprint race after the pair collided during an overtaking attempt. Antonelli openly criticized Russell’s driving over team radio at the time, describing the move as “very naughty” after being forced onto the grass.
However, tensions carried directly into Sunday’s main race as both Mercedes drivers once again fought fiercely for victory. The race eventually turned decisively in Antonelli’s favor when George Russell’s Mercedes suffered a power unit failure, forcing the British driver to retire while still heavily involved in the fight for the lead.
Russell’s frustration was clearly visible after the incident, with cameras capturing the driver throwing equipment in anger before leaving the circuit following the disappointing mechanical failure.
With Russell out of contention, Antonelli gained a clear path to victory and comfortably crossed the finish line more than 10 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton driving for Scuderia Ferrari.
The win extended Antonelli’s championship lead to 43 points over Russell after just five races in the 2026 Formula 1 season. While George Russell won the opening race in Australia, Antonelli has now secured victories in China, Japan, Miami, and Canada, establishing himself as the dominant driver of the season so far.
Speaking after the race, Antonelli admitted the battle with Russell had been one of the toughest and most exciting fights of his young Formula 1 career.
“It was a really fun battle with George. We were both pushing to the limit and it was entertaining for everyone watching,” Antonelli said following the victory.
Meanwhile, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton delivered his strongest performance since joining Ferrari by finishing second after overtaking Max Verstappen late in the race. Hamilton described the podium finish as an emotional moment after facing a difficult adjustment period with Ferrari.
Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc finished fourth, while Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar completed the top five positions.
McLaren Formula 1 Team experienced a disappointing weekend after Lando Norris retired due to a gearbox issue, while teammate Oscar Piastri finished outside the points following a failed tire strategy gamble.
For Sri Lankan Formula 1 fans, Antonelli’s rapid rise has become one of the biggest stories in global motorsport this year. Interest in Formula 1 has continued growing in Sri Lanka through streaming platforms and social media, particularly among younger audiences following emerging talents and dramatic rivalries within the sport.
Formula 1 analysts now widely believe Antonelli has emerged as the clear favorite for the 2026 championship, with many already describing the teenager as the future face of Formula 1. His fearless driving style, composure under pressure, and remarkable consistency have drawn comparisons to some of the greatest champions in the sport’s history despite his young age.
With 17 races still remaining in the season, Antonelli’s incredible form has already made him the biggest talking point in Formula 1 and one of the most exciting young stars in world sport today.
