Thirty Indian fishermen who had been detained in Sri Lanka have returned to Chennai after being released by Sri Lankan authorities.

The fishermen, who are from the coastal regions of Rameswaram and Karaikal, were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly crossing international maritime boundaries while engaged in fishing activities. Following their arrest, they were produced before court and later remanded in custody.

According to Indian media reports, diplomatic efforts between Sri Lanka and India helped secure the release of the fishermen. After completing the necessary legal procedures, the group was handed over to Indian authorities and transported back to India.

Incidents involving fishermen crossing maritime boundaries remain a recurring issue between the two neighboring countries. Both Sri Lanka and India have continued discussions aimed at finding long-term solutions to concerns surrounding fishing rights, maritime security, and the livelihoods of coastal communities.

The latest release is expected to provide relief to the families of the fishermen, while also highlighting the importance of continued cooperation between the two countries on fisheries-related matters.
