The Matara Magistrate’s Court has issued an arrest warrant for former Minister Basil Rajapaksa after he failed to appear before court in connection with an ongoing legal case linked to a controversial land transaction in Matara.
The order was issued today (22) by Matara Chief Magistrate Chaturanga Eranga Dissanayake when the case was taken up before court.
The case relates to the purchase of a one-and-a-half-acre land located at Brown’s Hill on Eliyakanda Road in Matara. The investigation had originally been initiated by the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID), which later filed the case before the Matara Magistrate’s Court.
When the matter was called today, Basil Rajapaksa was absent from the proceedings. Lawyers appearing on his behalf informed the court that the former minister is currently overseas receiving medical treatment due to illness.
His legal representatives also submitted medical reports to support the request, explaining that he was unable to return to Sri Lanka in time for the scheduled hearing.
However, the court reportedly took into consideration that Basil Rajapaksa had failed to appear before court on several previous occasions connected to the same case.
After reviewing submissions made by both parties, the Magistrate expressed concern regarding the repeated absence of the accused from court proceedings and subsequently ordered that an arrest warrant be issued against him.
The development has attracted major political and public attention, as Basil Rajapaksa remains one of the most influential political figures associated with Sri Lankan politics over the past two decades. He played a key role in several governments led by the Rajapaksa family and has remained a central figure in national political discussions even after stepping away from active parliamentary politics.
For Sri Lanka, legal proceedings involving senior former politicians continue to generate strong public interest, especially amid ongoing debates surrounding accountability, corruption investigations, misuse of state resources, and institutional reforms following the country’s economic crisis.
Legal analysts say the latest court decision may signal a stricter judicial approach toward ensuring attendance and accountability in high-profile financial crime and property-related investigations. Courts have increasingly faced public pressure to ensure equal treatment under the law regardless of political influence or status.
The FCID has previously conducted investigations into several financial transactions, property acquisitions, and alleged irregularities involving former political figures and public officials. This particular case focuses on the legality and financial background surrounding the Brown’s Hill land purchase in Matara.
Political observers believe the arrest warrant could intensify political debate regarding anti-corruption investigations and the legal scrutiny currently faced by several former senior government figures. Supporters and critics of the Rajapaksa family are already reacting strongly across political circles and social media platforms following today’s court order.
Meanwhile, legal experts note that arrest warrants issued in such cases may later be reviewed or suspended depending on future court submissions, medical evidence, or the accused’s return to the country.
Further legal proceedings connected to the case are expected in the coming weeks as authorities continue investigations and the court moves forward with the matter.
