Fresh developments have emerged in the investigation into the theft of more than Rs. 30 million from a state-owned bank branch in Horana, with authorities obtaining a detention order against one suspect and remanding another.
According to court proceedings held on June 6, a six-day detention order has been granted for the Assistant Manager of the bank branch, who was arrested in connection with the incident. Investigators are expected to question the suspect further during the detention period as part of ongoing inquiries into the large-scale cash theft.
Meanwhile, the bank’s security officer, who was also taken into custody over the same incident, has been remanded until June 11 following an order issued by the Acting Magistrate of Horana.
Both suspects were produced before the Acting Horana Magistrate’s Court on Friday evening, where police presented facts relating to the ongoing investigation.
The theft, involving more than Rs. 30 million in cash, has drawn significant public attention due to the large amount of money involved and the alleged connection of bank employees to the incident. Authorities have not yet disclosed full details regarding how the theft was carried out or whether additional suspects may be involved.
Police investigators are continuing to examine evidence, financial records and security-related information as part of efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the funds.
Officials say further legal action may be taken depending on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
The case is scheduled to be taken up again after the expiry of the remand period and detention order, while investigators continue gathering evidence.
