The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court has postponed the ongoing magisterial inquiry into the death of former SriLankan Airlines Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kapila Chandrasena until June 9, as investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death continue.
The inquiry was taken up before Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena on Thursday (05), where additional witness testimony and evidence were presented to assist the court in determining the facts related to the case.
During the proceedings, statements were recorded from President’s Counsel Rienzie Arsecularatne and Attorney-at-Law Udara Muhandiramge, who had previously represented Chandrasena in legal proceedings initiated by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
Their testimonies are expected to provide further context regarding matters connected to the deceased prior to his death and may assist investigators in establishing a clearer timeline of events.
The court also recorded a statement from the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Kollupitiya Police Station, who is involved in aspects of the ongoing investigation.
The death of Kapila Chandrasena has attracted significant public attention due to his former role as the head of SriLankan Airlines and his involvement in several high-profile legal proceedings in recent years.
A magisterial inquiry is a judicial process conducted to determine the circumstances of a death, particularly in cases where questions remain unanswered or where authorities consider further examination necessary. Such inquiries may involve witness testimony, documentary evidence, expert reports and statements from law enforcement officials.
Legal observers note that these proceedings play an important role in ensuring transparency and establishing a factual record before any further legal or investigative action is considered.
Following the recording of evidence presented during Thursday’s hearing, the Magistrate ordered that the inquiry be adjourned until June 9, when additional evidence and testimony are expected to be examined.
Authorities have not yet released any final findings regarding the circumstances of Chandrasena’s death, and investigations remain ongoing.
