Former Minister and Wimal Weerawansa has been arrested by officers attached to the Thalangama Police in connection with an incident that took place earlier this month near the National War Heroes’ Monument in Battaramulla.
According to reports, police took the former parliamentarian into custody after he arrived at the Thalangama Police Station to provide a statement regarding the controversial incident linked to preparations for the National War Heroes’ Day commemoration ceremony.
The arrest follows tensions that erupted on May 18 during rehearsal activities organized ahead of the official state commemoration event. Police had earlier announced that legal action would be initiated against a group, including Weerawansa, over allegations of obstructing official duties and disrupting rehearsal arrangements at the memorial site.
Authorities stated that a group of nearly 35 individuals, including the former minister and several supporters affiliated with the National Freedom Front, had allegedly attempted to enter the National War Heroes’ Monument premises without authorization while security rehearsals were taking place.
Police further claimed that officers stationed at the location prevented the group from entering the restricted area and later escorted them away in order to continue official preparations connected to the national ceremony without interruption.
The incident later escalated into a tense confrontation between police officers and the group led by Weerawansa. According to reports, the former MP and several party activists had visited the memorial site intending to pay floral tributes to military personnel who lost their lives during Sri Lanka’s war against terrorism.
However, disagreements reportedly arose after security personnel refused to grant access to the monument area during the restricted rehearsal period.
Video footage widely circulated on social media later showed heated verbal exchanges between police officers and the group near the memorial premises. One heavily shared clip appeared to show Wimal Weerawansa falling to the ground while attempting to move forward as police officers pushed the crowd away from the restricted zone.
The incident quickly generated strong political reactions and public debate across the country. Supporters of Weerawansa accused authorities of using excessive force and unfairly restricting access to a national memorial site, while police maintained that strict security procedures had to be enforced ahead of the state event.
During the confrontation, two individuals present at the scene were reportedly arrested and placed inside a police vehicle. Reports further indicated that Wimal Weerawansa later entered the same police vehicle before the two detained individuals were eventually released.
For Sri Lanka, incidents involving war memorials and military commemorations often carry deep political and emotional significance due to the country’s history of civil conflict and the sensitive national discussions surrounding military remembrance, patriotism, and political symbolism.
The National War Heroes’ Day commemoration remains one of Sri Lanka’s most important state ceremonies, honoring members of the armed forces who died during the country’s decades-long conflict against the LTTE. Security arrangements around such events are typically handled under strict protocols.
Political analysts say the arrest of Weerawansa is likely to further intensify debate between opposition figures and the government, particularly regarding political freedoms, law enforcement conduct, and the handling of politically sensitive public gatherings.
Meanwhile, police say investigations into the incident are continuing and that legal action will proceed against individuals found responsible for disrupting official state activities and security arrangements linked to the commemoration event.
The arrest has already triggered strong reactions across political circles and social media platforms, with supporters and critics expressing sharply divided opinions regarding both the police response and the actions of the group involved.
What happens next will depend on the outcome of ongoing police investigations and future court proceedings connected to the Battaramulla War Heroes’ Monument incident.
