Former Director of the State Intelligence Service (SIS), Suresh Salley, has decided to end the hunger strike he began while in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), following legal advice from his attorneys.

Salley is currently receiving treatment at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka after his health deteriorated during the protest.

He was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department on February 25 in connection with the ongoing investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday terrorist attacks. Following his arrest, he was detained under a 72-hour detention order for questioning.

During his detention, Salley launched a hunger strike demanding that the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department be removed from overseeing the investigation into his case and that he be transferred to a different place of detention.

According to available information, his health gradually worsened while observing the hunger strike, and he reportedly suffered a cardiac-related medical emergency on June 27.

He remains under medical care in the Cardiology Unit of the National Hospital in Colombo.

Investigations related to the Easter Sunday attacks are continuing.
