Health authorities have warned that road accidents and drowning incidents could increase significantly during the upcoming long weekend coinciding with the Vesak festival.
Consultant Community Physician Dr. Samitha Siritunga of the Ministry of Health’s Non-Communicable Diseases Unit urged the public to exercise extra caution while travelling and participating in recreational activities during the holiday period.
According to Dr. Siritunga, previous data shows a noticeable rise in accidents during long weekends, particularly road traffic accidents and drowning-related incidents.
He noted that a similar trend is expected during the Vesak long weekend as large numbers of people travel across the country and visit recreational locations.
Dr. Siritunga explained that accidents can occur due to various factors, including driver negligence, passenger behavior, pedestrian actions, poor road conditions and vehicle maintenance issues.
He also highlighted the dangers associated with water-related activities, warning that water levels in reservoirs, rivers and other water bodies can rise rapidly due to changing weather conditions.
Such situations can create strong currents and underwater hazards, increasing the likelihood of drowning incidents.
The health official further advised the public not to attempt rescue operations unless properly trained, emphasizing that untrained rescue attempts can place additional lives at risk.
Authorities are urging the public to prioritize safety, follow traffic regulations and remain alert while enjoying Vesak celebrations and long-weekend activities.
