The Department of Meteorology has warned that heavy rainfall exceeding 100 millimetres is likely in several parts of Sri Lanka over the coming hours, as unstable weather conditions continue to affect the island.

According to the latest forecast, showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western Provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.

Meteorologists say some areas within these regions could receive rainfall of around 100mm or more, increasing the risk of localized flooding, waterlogging and disruptions to transportation.

A few showers are also forecast in the Anuradhapura District.

Meanwhile, strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour are expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, the Northern and North-Central Provinces, and the Hambantota and Trincomalee districts.

Other parts of the country may also experience fairly strong winds ranging between 30 and 40 kilometres per hour.

The Department of Meteorology has urged the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions against possible damage caused by strong winds, lightning and heavy rainfall during thundershowers.

Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to monitor weather updates and follow instructions issued by disaster management and emergency response agencies.

With adverse weather conditions expected to continue, officials are closely monitoring the situation across the island.
