The Department of Meteorology has forecast widespread showers and thundershowers across several parts of Sri Lanka today (June 7), with heavy rainfall expected in a number of districts.

According to the latest weather advisory, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western Provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.

The department has warned that some areas within these regions could receive rainfall exceeding 100 millimetres, increasing the possibility of localized flooding and temporary disruptions in low-lying areas.

A few showers are also expected in the Anuradhapura and Hambantota districts.

In addition to the rainfall, strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour may occur at times over the western slopes of the central hills, the Northern and North-Central Provinces, and the districts of Hambantota and Trincomalee.

Other parts of the country may experience fairly strong winds ranging between 30 and 40 kilometres per hour.

The Department of Meteorology has advised the public to take necessary precautions against possible damage caused by strong winds, lightning and temporary localized weather conditions during thundershowers.

Residents in vulnerable areas are encouraged to remain updated with official weather advisories and follow instructions issued by relevant authorities.
