The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) says it is continuing its investigation into allegations that former State Intelligence Service (SIS) Director Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay was subjected to mistreatment while in detention.
HRCSL Commissioner Nimal G. Punchihewa stated that further statements are being recorded from officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as part of the ongoing inquiry.
The investigation follows a complaint lodged by relatives of Suresh Sallay, who alleged that he was subjected to various forms of ill-treatment while being held in CID custody.
As part of the inquiry, officials from the Human Rights Commission conducted a special inspection of the detention cell where Sallay had been held.
According to the Commission, the inspection revealed several shortcomings in the detention facility, including inadequate ventilation and other basic deficiencies related to detention conditions.
The HRCSL stated that these observations have been brought to the attention of CID officials for necessary action.
Investigators have also recorded statements from other detainees who were held in nearby cells, in addition to obtaining information from CID officers connected to the facility.
The Commission noted that further statements will be gathered as the investigation continues.
Meanwhile, the Human Rights Commission said it is also monitoring the medical treatment and healthcare facilities being provided to Sallay, who is currently receiving treatment in hospital.
The inquiry remains ongoing, and the Commission has stated that its findings will be reviewed upon completion of the investigation.
