Sri Lanka is experiencing a sharp increase in dengue infections, with the total number of reported cases exceeding 54,000 amid continued rainy weather across the country.
According to the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU), 54,189 dengue cases have been recorded so far in 2026, highlighting the growing public health concern as mosquito breeding conditions remain favourable.
Acting Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, Dr. Kapila Kannangara, said the country is currently reporting between 950 and 1,000 new dengue infections each day.
He revealed that 1,030 new dengue cases were reported within the past 24 hours alone, indicating that transmission continues at a rapid pace.
Health authorities are continuing island-wide dengue control operations and have appealed to the public to support ongoing prevention efforts by eliminating mosquito breeding sites around homes, schools, workplaces and public areas.
Dr. Kannangara emphasized that community participation remains essential to reducing the spread of the disease, particularly as special dengue control programmes are scheduled to continue over the next three days.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid allowing stagnant water to collect in containers, gutters, discarded tyres and other locations where mosquitoes can breed.
