The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) has announced a temporary disruption to water supply in several suburbs of Colombo following an emergency breakdown in a major transmission pipeline.
According to the NWSDB, the interruption is due to a sudden fault in the main pipeline that transports treated water from the Ambathale Water Treatment Plant to Kolonnawa.
As a result, water supply has been suspended in a number of affected areas while repair work is being carried out by technical teams.
The areas experiencing the disruption include Moragasmulla, Rajagiriya, Nawala, Obeysekarapura, as well as areas falling under the Kolonnawa Municipal Council limits.
The Water Board stated that restoration work is currently underway and water supply is expected to return to normal by 8:00 p.m. today (05), provided repairs are completed as scheduled.
Officials noted that emergency maintenance on major transmission pipelines is essential to prevent further damage and ensure the long-term reliability of the water distribution network.
Residents and businesses in the affected areas have been advised to use water sparingly and make alternative arrangements where necessary until the supply is fully restored.
Water supply interruptions caused by pipeline failures can impact households, commercial establishments, schools, healthcare facilities and other institutions that rely on a continuous supply of treated water.
The NWSDB has apologized for the inconvenience caused and assured the public that every effort is being made to complete repairs and resume normal services as quickly as possible.
Consumers are encouraged to stay updated through official announcements issued by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board regarding the progress of the repair work and the restoration of supply.
